Comedian Brain Jotter cries out after being harassed by Lagos louts

Popular Nigerian comedian and content creator Chukwuebuka Amuzie, widely known as Brain Jotter, has voiced his distress after experiencing harassment by suspected thugs while driving in Lagos. The incident, which he shared on his Instagram page, involved a group of men who reportedly blocked his vehicle and demanded money before allowing him to proceed.

In a post accompanied by a video, Brain Jotter expressed his frustration, likening the situation to a "Nigerian zoo" where "wildlife" had escaped. The video captured the confrontation on a Lagos road, where the content creator was accosted by the men demanding a settlement.

This experience adds to a growing pattern of complaints from entertainers, professionals, and residents regarding the activities of "area boys," also referred to as "agberos," across Lagos. Recently, DJ Salt of Life, the younger sister of Afrobeats star Ayra Starr, reported that her car was damaged by suspected area boys who mistook her for her sister and attacked her vehicle when she refused to give them money.

Medical doctor Olusina Ajidahun, known as The Bearded Sina, and music video director ThankGod Omori, known as TG Omori, have also recounted separate incidents of extortion and threats from street touts while performing their professional duties. Ajidahun described how touts disrupted a free medical outreach in Mushin, demanding money under threat of causing chaos.

Lagos State officials have previously acknowledged the issue, with Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stating that the government has been arresting and dislodging street urchins. However, he noted that cash handouts from the public inadvertently encourage this behavior, fostering a sense of entitlement among the touts. Wahab called for collective responsibility to create a safer and more orderly Lagos.
