Comedian Recalls Embarrassing 'Grandmother Died' Gaffe as Party MC

Comedian Kim Gyu-won shared a mortifying anecdote from his past as a party MC, recounting a significant verbal blunder that led him to quit the job. While appearing on the MBC show 'Save Me! Home,' Kim recalled his days as a struggling comedian taking on MC gigs for children's first birthday parties to make ends meet.

Kim explained that he earned about 30,000 won per event and had to rely on charming the parents to earn tips. He highlighted the challenges of the job, noting that the "host is a one-year-old baby," and if the infant became upset and cried, the entire event could be ruined. He even shared a tip for waking a fussy baby: gently dipping their hand in a cup of water.

The comedian's career as a party MC came to an abrupt end after a disastrous game of rock-paper-scissors. He noticed an elderly woman consistently playing her moves a beat late. While trying to navigate the situation delicately, Kim's words became jumbled. He recalled saying, "A few minutes are still alive, and there's one over there, and my grandmother is still alive," intending to refer to participants not yet eliminated from the game. This awkward phrasing, however, created a strange atmosphere when directed at the grandmother.

Things escalated when the grandmother was eventually eliminated from the game. In a moment of panic and mental freeze, Kim blurted out, "Grandmother, you died!" He admitted that while he meant she was out of the game, the preceding comment made the situation far more uncomfortable. His co-star Yang Se-hyung empathized, acknowledging how difficult that moment must have been.
