Comedian Shin Dong-yup reveals 'father's indifference' as key to daughter's Seoul National University admission

South Korean comedian Shin Dong-yup revealed his unique approach to parenting, which he credits for his daughter's successful admission to Seoul National University. Appearing on the SBS entertainment program 'My Little Old Boy,' Shin Dong-yup shared his educational principles, humorously dubbed 'father's indifference and mother's information.'

When asked about his parenting strategy for his daughter, who is now a student at Seoul National University, Shin Dong-yup admitted he largely deferred academic management to his wife, PD Sun Hye-yoon. He explained that his wife was responsible for gathering necessary information regarding his daughter's studies and college applications, while he maintained a deliberate distance to avoid overwhelming their child.

Despite his hands-off approach to academics, Shin Dong-yup emphasized that he consistently advised his daughter on a crucial aspect of life: choosing a good partner. He stressed the importance of selecting a suitable boyfriend and, later, a good spouse. Instead of defining what constitutes a 'good man,' he focused on teaching her how to identify 'unsuitable men,' drawing from his own experiences.

Shin Dong-yup's daughter, Shin Ji-hyo, followed a path in the arts, majoring in ballet at Sunhwa Arts Middle and High School before gaining admission to both Korea National University of Arts and Seoul National University's Department of Physical Education. She ultimately chose to attend Seoul National University. Her mother, PD Sun Hye-yoon, is an alumna of Seoul National University's Department of German Education.
