Commonwealth Games: Nigeria Leads Africa in Fourth Place After Day Four

Team Nigeria is making a strong showing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, maintaining a fourth-place position on the medals table after four days of competition. The team leads all other African nations and host Scotland, having amassed 10 medals: six gold and four silver. This performance places Nigeria behind only powerhouse nations Australia, England, and Canada.

The country's success is largely driven by dominance in para powerlifting and weightlifting. Para powerlifters Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and Riluwan Idris all secured gold medals, with Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema, and Rita Ferdinand adding silver. The momentum continued in weightlifting, where Edidiong Umoafia claimed gold in the men's 71kg event with a Commonwealth Games record total of 319kg.

Onome Omolola Didih delivered Nigeria's fifth gold medal in the women's 53kg event, setting new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift. Reigning champion Rafiatu Folashade Lawal successfully defended her women's 58kg title, also setting new records across all three lifts for the country's sixth gold. Ruth Asuquo Nyong contributed Nigeria's fourth silver medal in the women's 48kg weightlifting event.

These impressive results reflect extensive preparation, including a high-performance training camp. With more events in athletics, wrestling, boxing, and weightlifting still to come, Team Nigeria is on track for one of its most successful Commonwealth Games campaigns. The team's strong performance keeps them ahead of African rivals South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, and Uganda.
