Competition for State Prosecutor General in Ecuador narrows to 26 applicants

The race to appoint Ecuador's next State Prosecutor General has seen its field reduced to 26 contenders following the voluntary withdrawal of one applicant. The selection process, overseen by the Citizen Participation and Social Control Council (CPCCS), is currently navigating the citizen challenge and public scrutiny phase.

Luis Augusto Rosero Méndez, a former fiscal agent from Pichincha, officially withdrew his application on August 2, 2026. He had achieved a score of 38 out of a possible 50 points during the merits evaluation stage before deciding to step down. The CPCCS formally approved his departure during a plenary session.

Since the application period began in March 2026 with 75 initial registrants, the list of candidates has undergone several reductions. After the initial admissibility phase, 28 contenders remained. Subsequent administrative and voluntary departures have now fixed the active participant count at 26.

This process has also seen other notable exits, including former Minister of Government, José De La Gasca, who was disqualified for failing to submit a declaration of no conflict of interest. The current stage involves reviewing citizen challenges against the remaining candidates' applications, with any appeals to be considered by the CPCCS plenary.
