Concepción Hospital Offers Free Cataract Surgeries with Advanced Technology

The Concepción Regional Hospital is successfully consolidating its free cataract surgery program, performing 95 successful interventions since its launch in April. This initiative, driven by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare, aims to decentralize specialized ophthalmological care and ensure equitable access to healthcare.

Saturdays are dedicated to these procedures, with the hospital averaging eight to ten operations per session. Of the 95 patients treated, 40 have already been discharged after showing significant recovery and regaining their vision, which has notably enhanced their daily lives and independence. The program's reach extends beyond Concepción, serving patients from areas like Pedro Juan Caballero, San Pedro, and Puerto Casado, establishing the hospital as a key ophthalmological center in the north.

Utilizing the internationally recognized phacoemulsification technique, the surgeries involve fragmenting the clouded lens through a micro-incision and replacing it with a foldable intraocular lens. This minimally invasive method ensures high precision and a swift recovery, leading to almost immediate visual improvement for patients. Beyond surgeries, the Ophthalmology Service offers continuous care from Monday to Friday, with specialists providing diagnosis and follow-up.

To access the service, individuals should visit the Public Health sector at the Concepción Regional Hospital from Monday to Friday, with appointments scheduled daily starting at 6:00 AM. Patients undergo a general consultation and pre-surgical evaluations before being selected for the procedure.
