Confirmed Case of Crimean-Congo Fever in Vienna

A patient in Vienna has been diagnosed with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), a rare viral disease. The individual is currently receiving treatment in stable condition at Klinik Favoriten, where they are being cared for in a special isolation unit.

Medical authorities suspect the patient contracted the illness during a recent visit to the Middle East. CCHF is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected ticks, although direct contact with infected animals' blood or tissues can also lead to infection. The disease is endemic in parts of Africa, Southeastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Early symptoms typically include a sudden onset of fever, severe headaches, muscle and joint pain, back pain, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain. In severe cases, patients can develop bleeding and organ impairment, potentially leading to multi-organ failure. While human-to-human transmission is possible, it predominantly occurs through close, unprotected contact with blood or other bodily fluids, making everyday social contact extremely unlikely to spread the virus.

Christoph Wenisch, head of Infectiology and Tropical Medicine at Klinik Favoriten, stated that the fever was diagnosed quickly and the patient is in expert hands. The department is well-equipped to handle highly infectious diseases and has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating such conditions.
