Conflict of Interest? Mayor Wins Garden Award in His Own City

Dugo Selo Mayor Nenad Panian has found himself at the center of a controversy after winning second place in a local competition for the most beautiful garden. The award, part of a project organized by the Dugo Selo Tourist Board to encourage residents to beautify their homes and yards, has raised questions about a potential conflict of interest.

Panian, who also serves as the president of the Dugo Selo Tourist Board, was awarded a robotic lawnmower worth approximately 300 euros for his garden. The first place in the garden category went to Mile Franjić, while Lana Vranjić secured third. Karla Banić won first place for the most beautiful balcony, with Ivan Lenardić taking second.

The mayor expressed deep regret over his participation, admitting he felt foolish and ashamed. He explained that he had been gardening for 40 years and felt his efforts deserved recognition. Panian claimed he only entered after being persuaded by the Tourist Board director, Karmela Vukov Colić, and believed the contest was anonymous. "I messed up. I'm to blame for spending 40 years in gardens and thinking my effort should be rewarded in some way other than politically," he told Dnevnik.hr. He added that he would not enter again and would donate the prize.

Panian emphasized his clean record over three terms as mayor, stating that despite scrutiny, no wrongdoing has been found. He suggested that perhaps some were looking for something to criticize.
