Congo Religious Leaders Consult Political Actors on National Dialogue

Religious leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo are actively engaging with political figures to foster an inclusive national dialogue, a process initiated by President Félix Tshisekedi. The National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) and the Church of Christ in Congo (ECC) have commenced a series of consultations with political actors aimed at addressing the nation's pressing issues.

During the initial phase of these consultations, religious leaders met with representatives of the opposition coalition C64. A key point of discussion was the planned protest on July 22, where the opposition intends to demand President Tshisekedi's resignation. The outcome of a meeting among opposition leaders on July 20 could determine whether this demonstration proceeds or is postponed.

We have had the time to exchange with them. They asked pertinent questions from their point of view, particularly on inclusivity, where they wanted to understand the terms of the dialogue. They also raised the issue of the Constitution's fate.

Pastor Eric Senga, spokesperson for the ECC, reported that the opposition raised pertinent questions regarding the inclusivity of the dialogue and the future of the Constitution. The opposition coalition has formed specifically to counter a constitutional reform project proposed by the ruling party. Pastor Senga emphasized that the religious leaders' mission is to facilitate national reconciliation and bring all citizens together in a peaceful, consensual environment to discuss matters of national importance.

The mediators have announced their intention to continue these consultations with various other political factions and civil society groups. This initiative seeks to bridge divides and create a platform for constructive dialogue on issues critical to the country's stability and future.
