CONMEBOL mourns death of Jorge Messi, father of Lionel Messi

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has conveyed its profound sorrow following the death of Jorge Messi, the father of Argentine football icon Lionel Messi. Jorge Messi passed away at the age of 68.

CONMEBOL shared its condolences via X, stating, "CONMEBOL deeply regrets the passing of Jorge Messi, father of the Argentine footballer Lionel Messi. We accompany with respect and affection Lionel, his family, friends, and loved ones in this moment of deep pain. May he rest in peace." The organization is headquartered in Luque, Paraguay.

CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez also extended his sympathies on X, assuring Messi and his family that "the entire South American football family" stands with them. He added, "Dear Leo, may the affection of your family, your friends, and all of us who love you accompany you and give you strength in this enormous loss."

Messages of solidarity also came from the Professional Football League, part of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), Newell's Old Boys of Rosario where Messi began his career, and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Jorge Horacio Messi, born in Rosario in 1958, died in the early hours of Saturday at the Sanatorio Centro clinic, where he had been admitted due to complications from a long illness. He was instrumental in his son's career, serving as his representative and managing family finances.
