CONMEBOL pushes for a 64-team World Cup in 2030

CONMEBOL is actively advocating for an expansion of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, proposing a 64-team format to commemorate the tournament's 100th anniversary. CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez revealed that discussions are underway to make this significant change.

The 2030 World Cup is set to be a historic event, co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. As part of the centenary celebrations, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will each host a single match, adding a unique multi-continental dimension before the main tournament proceeds in the primary host nations. Domínguez sees the expanded 64-team format as a fitting tribute to the World Cup's centennial.

"We are working to make the 2030 World Cup a tournament featuring 64 national teams in honor of the centenary of the competition’s creation," Domínguez stated. He emphasized that football's continuous growth necessitates greater inclusivity. The previous expansion to 48 teams, he noted, has already demonstrated how broader participation fosters development worldwide and transforms the World Cup into a truly global spectacle.

Domínguez described the centenary edition as an unparalleled opportunity to stage the largest celebration in football history. An expanded tournament would bring together more nations than ever before, reinforcing the sport's universal appeal and its capacity to unite diverse communities.
