Consensus reached on 15 commissions, but last-minute adjustments delay National Assembly session

The opening of Panama's National Assembly session was postponed due to last-minute disputes over the formation of its 15 permanent commissions. While Assembly President Shirley Castañeda initially announced a consensus among all political blocs, subsequent dissatisfaction from some deputies regarding their committee assignments led to further negotiations.

Sources within the legislature indicated that the delays stemmed from deputies expressing discomfort with the committees they were placed on. This prompted a review of several lists before they could be presented to the full assembly. The extended discussions involved Castañeda and leaders of various party blocs, including Benicio Robinson of the PRD, and representatives from Vamos, Cambio Democrático, and Realizando Metas.

One of the most closely watched commissions is the Budget Committee. Its preliminary composition included several prominent deputies, but this list was also subject to modifications. The ongoing adjustments meant that the session, initially scheduled for 3:30 p.m., was significantly delayed, leaving the officialization of the permanent commissions in suspense. This step is crucial for the Assembly to formally resume its legislative activities.
