Container truck drives 3km after blowout on Zhongshan Expressway, damaging two cars

A container truck driver is facing legal action after continuing to drive for approximately three kilometers on Taiwan's Zhongshan Expressway (National Highway 1) with a blown-out tire. The incident occurred on the morning of August 25th, causing tire fragments and vehicle parts to litter the roadway and damage two passenger cars.

The truck, driven by a man identified by the surname Huang, had a blowout on its left front tire near the Linkou section of the highway. Despite the apparent damage, Huang continued driving until he reached the 39-kilometer mark, where he pulled over to the shoulder. During this time, debris including tire皮 (tire skin), wheel components, and brake parts scattered across the southbound lanes.

Two vehicles were damaged as a result. One car, driven by a man named Hong, had its windshield struck by a piece of debris, narrowly missing the driver. Another driver, surnamed Xiao, also sustained vehicle damage from running over the scattered parts. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Police administered breathalyzer tests to the three drivers involved, all of whom registered zero alcohol. Huang, the truck driver, claimed he was unaware he had continued driving for such a distance after the tire blowout. However, authorities expressed skepticism regarding his statement. The cause of the incident is under further investigation. Highway police reminded the public to prioritize safety in case of a blowout, advising drivers to maintain control, ease off the accelerator without braking, and coast to the shoulder, activating hazard lights and placing a warning triangle.
