Copa Sudamericana: Cienciano advances despite brawl after match with Botafogo

Cienciano of Peru secured a spot in the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals, advancing on a 6-2 aggregate score despite a 1-0 loss to Botafogo in the second leg. The victory, however, was overshadowed by a violent brawl that erupted on the field immediately after the final whistle.

The post-match chaos saw Botafogo players confront Cienciano's coach, Horacio Melgarejo, with defenders Alex Telles and Marçal reportedly leading the charge. Melgarejo was allegedly cornered and struck multiple times near a advertising board, prompting Cienciano's players and staff to form a protective barrier.

This physical altercation quickly escalated into a mass fight involving both teams, including substitutes. Brazilian police had to intervene to restore order. The intense hostility stemmed from earlier encounters, including alleged threats from Botafogo players after their heavy defeat in the first leg and a perceived taunt by Melgarejo early in the second match. Controversial VAR decisions also fueled frustration for the Brazilian side.

When questioned about the aggression, Melgarejo declined to comment extensively, stating, "I am not going to answer because everything is recorded."
