Coquimbo Unido Secures Agonizing Draw at Platense

In a tense Copa Libertadores clash between two debutants in the knockout stage, Argentinian side Platense was held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by Chile's Coquimbo Unido. The first leg of their round of 16 tie, played at the Estadio Ciudad de Vicente López in Buenos Aires, saw Platense squander a late lead.

Platense, managed by former Boca Juniors star Martín Palermo, opened the scoring in the 35th minute. Luciano Giménez headed home a cross from Juan Ignacio Saborido, giving the home side a deserved lead. Coquimbo Unido, coached by Hernán Caputto, struggled to break down Platense's defense for much of the match, often resorting to counter-attacks.

The game intensified in the second half. Platense had a golden opportunity to double their lead in the 80th minute when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Guido Mainero. However, Coquimbo's goalkeeper, Diego Sánchez, made a crucial save on Mainero's spot-kick and then denied Nicolás López on the rebound.

Just as Platense seemed poised to secure a vital first-leg victory, Coquimbo Unido found a lifeline in the dying moments. In the 90th minute plus four, Guido Vadalá netted the equalizer, sending the visiting players and staff into celebration. This late goal provides Coquimbo Unido with a significant away goal advantage as they prepare to host the second leg next week at their home stadium.
