Corfu's West: Adults-only luxury with sunset views

Corfu, or Kérkyra as it's known to Greeks, presents itself as an accessible and verdant escape, particularly its northwestern region. Flights from Vienna reach the island in just over an hour and a half, making even a weekend trip feasible, though longer stays are recommended to fully appreciate its charms. The island's lush landscape, visible even during the descent, is a testament to its location, with its northernmost tip situated at the latitude of Albania.

While the eastern coast of Corfu features numerous large resorts, the western side offers a different experience, especially where the sun dips below the dramatic cliffs. Reaching this side from the airport near the capital involves navigating narrow, winding roads through green, cypress-dotted hillsides. This journey passes smaller villages, leading travelers toward a part of the island where the sunset is a primary attraction, alongside the sea and beaches.

Agios Gordios serves as a good starting point for exploring the central west coast, approximately a 45-minute drive from the airport. The village itself boasts a fine sandy beach and crystal-clear waters, framed by impressive rocky cliffs. While the village offers necessary amenities, the surrounding landscape is its main draw. Accommodations range from guesthouses to exclusive resorts.

Among the recent additions is the Ella Álkyna, an adults-only hotel that opened last year after extensive renovation and expansion of a pre-existing facility. Operated by Ella Resorts, which is expanding in Greece, the hotel is situated beneath a striking rock formation. It offers a comprehensive all-inclusive experience with pool bars and dining, though the steepness of the hillside location means the walk from the beach to rooms can be challenging. Guests can opt for golf cart transport or take breaks at the various pool bars along the ascent.
