Costa Rica strengthens organ donation and transplant program with Spanish and Argentine support

Costa Rica is bolstering its organ donation and transplant program through a significant exchange of expertise with Spain and Argentina. The initiative seeks to provide more life-saving opportunities for individuals awaiting transplants.

Health Ministry officials highlighted the importance of this international cooperation, emphasizing its role in improving care for organ donors and reinforcing the work of healthcare teams. As part of the effort, Costa Rican medical professionals visited Argentina, while a team of four specialists from Spain's National Transplant Organization (ONT) shared their knowledge with their Costa Rican counterparts.

He further emphasized that the Spanish specialists' experience is crucial for strengthening Costa Rica's donation and transplant processes, noting that "each advance in donation and transplant means hope for many people and their families."

The collaboration focuses on enhancing the evaluation of the donation process, donor maintenance, and best practices in caring for potential donors. This initiative complements the ongoing work by the Technical Secretariat for Donation and Transplant to fortify the National Donation and Transplant System, ensuring continuous improvement in processes, quality, and safety.
