Count Nikolai in documentary: My life has changed with new title

Count Nikolai's life has undergone a profound transformation since the Danish royal house stripped him and his siblings of their princely titles. In a new TV 2 documentary titled "Nikolai," the young royal speaks candidly about adjusting to his altered circumstances and finding his own way forward.

"Both my life and the role I previously had to fulfill have changed. A decision was made on my behalf, and that is of course never pleasant," Nikolai stated, according to Ekstra Bladet. Despite the unexpected shift, he expressed a determination to view the situation positively. "But like everything else in life, I am trying to make the best of things and see things in a positive light. And now I am finding my own way in life with the role and the conditions I have now," the Count added.

The decision, announced in September 2022 by Queen Margrethe, aimed to allow Prince Joachim's children greater freedom to shape their own futures. However, the move initially caused distress for Prince Joachim and left Count Nikolai in "shock." During an exchange program in Sydney, Australia, in September 2023, Nikolai reflected on the change, noting that while he hadn't felt restricted by his title before, he anticipated more freedom in the future.

The four-part documentary series "Nikolai" chronicles a year in the life of the former prince as he navigates the balance between his professional endeavors and personal dreams. The series premiered on TV 2 Play and TV 2 Echo on Monday, June 22.
