Couple charged in Ruiz murder

A man and woman from Edinburgh, Chaguanas, face charges for the murder of 28-year-old Shayanna Ruiz. Ruiz was fatally stabbed on July 29 during a dispute at a home in Edinburgh 500 South. She had gone to collect $4,500 owed to her by a former boyfriend.

Investigators stated that an argument began between Ruiz and the former boyfriend, escalating when his current girlfriend allegedly intervened. Police report that the woman grabbed a knife during the altercation and repeatedly stabbed Ruiz before fleeing the scene with the man.

Ruiz was transported to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope, where she received treatment for multiple stab wounds. She died shortly after. A post-mortem examination confirmed that her death resulted from cardiopulmonary arrest due to multiple penetrating wounds. Crime scene investigators secured a black-handled knife, which is believed to be the weapon used in the assault. The couple was expected to appear in court yesterday, but the outcome remained unconfirmed up to last night.
