Couple Cycles 25,000km From Norway to South Africa in 797 Days

Annabelle Golden, 27, packed nearly all her possessions onto her bicycle for a journey that would span 797 days and cover more than 25,000 kilometers from Norway to South Africa. This trip marked the first stage of her and her boyfriend Alex Ohtea's ambitious plan to cycle around the globe.

Their preparation took about ten months, involving route planning, securing sponsors, and commissioning custom-built steel bikes designed for long distances and challenging conditions. Golden, who had previously traveled extensively with a backpack and worked remotely, had never undertaken such an extensive cycling tour.

"The bicycle is your home and your vehicle. Everything you need must be with you," Golden told People. Their route took them from Norway through Europe and down the west coast of Africa. They typically cycled for six to eight hours daily, covering between 65 and 145 kilometers. Nights were spent camping, in budget guesthouses, or with people offering cyclists lodging.

Golden noted the journey was more affordable than many might assume, with primary expenses being food, visas, and occasional hotel stays. The trip offered a gradual immersion in changing landscapes, from Norwegian fjords to the Sahara Desert. However, the people they met left the deepest impression. Millions followed their adventure on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, with social media interactions leading to offers of hospitality, assistance at borders, and warm welcomes.

Golden and Ohtea arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, on July 19, having cycled 25,315 kilometers. They are currently in South Africa preparing for the next phase of their journey. Golden reflected that the adventure taught her she needs far less than she previously believed. "I feel like I have everything I need," she said.
