Couple retires before 40 by packing lunches for a decade, saving $53,000

Beyond packed lunches, the couple adopted a philosophy of self-sufficiency, avoiding unnecessary spending and even foregoing heating during southern England's winters in favor of multiple layers of clothing and hot water bottles. Alan, now 40, described this not as suffering but as a deliberate strategy.

Their ultimate goal was to amass £1 million (around $1.3 million) in investments, enough capital to generate passive income that would sustain their desired lifestyle. Having reached this target, they left their jobs seven years ago, with Katie being 35 and Alan 40 at the time of their retirement. They now travel the world together, embodying the FIRE movement's promise of early freedom from traditional employment.
