Court adjourns Anambra whistleblower's bail hearing to October 2026

The Federal High Court in Awka, Anambra State, has adjourned the bail application hearing for Nnamdi Emeh, a whistleblower facing trial for publishing reports alleging police misconduct, to October 27, 2026.

As you can see we are all here in the court today for continuation of proceedings in the case, you can equally see the father of the accused, the Prof. John Emeh. But we were given a date by the court for the hearing to continue on October 27, 2026.

Emeh, an Information Technology specialist and former National Youth Service Corps member attached to the Anambra State Police Command's Rapid Response Squad, is accused of publishing reports in early 2023 that detailed an alleged criminal network involving senior police officers. These reports claimed the existence of an organ trafficking syndicate, extrajudicial killings of detainees, and widespread extortion and kidnapping within the state police force.

Yes, of course, Nnamdi Emeh was granted bail by the court on the 17th day of May 2023, following our application for bail that was argued before the former court, and the court in its wisdom admitted him to bail.

Following the online disclosures, the Nigeria Police Force declared Emeh a wanted person on February 20, 2023. He subsequently fled to the Republic of Benin but was arrested on March 3, 2023, and returned to Nigeria. Although the court granted him bail in May 2023, he has remained in detention as the process of perfecting his bail conditions has faced significant delays.

However, we remain optimistic that Nnamdi will regain his freedom. We are not making a fresh application because the order admitting him to bail is still subsisting. It is for us to perfect the bail, and he will regain his freedom.

During Tuesday's court session, the case was postponed due to the court prioritizing time-sensitive pre-election matters. Emeh's counsel, Justus Ijeoma, a human rights activist, expressed optimism about Emeh regaining freedom once the bail is perfected, noting that the existing bail order remains valid. He highlighted the numerous "human bottlenecks" encountered during the bail perfection process.
