Court extends Lissu treason case hearing by 14 days

The High Court in Dar es Salaam has added 14 days to the hearing of treason charges against Chadema chairman Tundu Lissu, as the proceedings run beyond their original schedule.

The hearing began on August 10, 2026, and was due to end on September 7 before the case was adjourned. Proceedings continued after that date, but the fourth defence witness had not yet completed her evidence-in-chief.

Justice Dunstan Ndunguru announced the extension on behalf of a three-judge panel that also includes Justices James Karayemaha and Ferdinand Kiwonde. He said the additional period was intended to bring the case to a conclusion.

“You will recall that, according to the cause list, today was the final day scheduled for hearing this matter,” Ndunguru said. “However, the matter has been extended for 14 days from today, with the aim of ensuring that it is concluded within this period.” He urged both sides to avoid unnecessary questioning as they work to finish the hearing.
