Court orders three-month detention for repeat drunk driver on A1 highway

A court in Częstochowa, Poland, has ordered the three-month pre-trial detention of Krzysztof K., a 36-year-old man accused of causing a dangerous situation on the A1 highway while driving drunk. The incident occurred on July 18, when Krzysztof K., already subject to driving bans, drove his car erratically and collided with a truck.

Police measured Krzysztof K.'s blood alcohol level at 2.7 permille. It was also discovered that he was violating court orders prohibiting him from driving and had disregarded a decision by the local governor to revoke his driving license. The suspect is facing charges of endangering road traffic, a severe offense that carries a potential sentence of up to 12 years in prison.

The case gained significant attention after the District Prosecutor's Office in Lublin, which initially handled the investigation, did not request detention for Krzysztof K. This decision prompted an intervention by Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek. Following his intervention, the deputy district prosecutor in Lublin was dismissed for failing to supervise the case, and the District Prosecutor's Office in Częstochowa took over the investigation.

Krzysztof K. has confessed to the charges. The District Prosecutor's Office in Częstochowa justified its request for detention based on the severity of the potential sentence, the risk of the suspect fleeing or hiding, and the possibility of tampering with evidence. Prosecutors also expressed concern that Krzysztof K. might commit further offenses against public safety if left free.

The suspect was taken to a police station in Woźniki after the incident. The investigation is ongoing, with the District Prosecutor's Office in Częstochowa now leading the proceedings.
