Court to livestream Nadiem Makarim's defense in Chromebook corruption case

The Central Jakarta District Court is set to broadcast live the defense proceedings for former Indonesian Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Makarim. The trial, scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, 2026, concerns an alleged corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops.

Court Chairman Husnul Khotimah stated that the live streaming is a measure to accommodate significant public interest in the case, allowing individuals to witness the proceedings from home. This decision also addresses the physical limitations of the courtroom, which can only seat approximately 70 people, including the defendant's family and media representatives.

We are opening the live streaming. The public can witness it from their own homes and do not need to attend in person.

Nadiem Makarim, who previously served as the minister, is facing serious charges. Prosecutors have requested an 18-year prison sentence, accusing him of corruption. The defense team, led by Ari Yusuf Amir, has been preparing meticulously for Makarim's plea presentation, which is expected to be a lengthy statement of 30 to 40 pages.

The trial will commence with Makarim reading his personal defense statement, followed by the legal advisory team's presentation. The defense team plans to present a summary of their extensive defense, which spans nearly 1,000 pages, and will incorporate video clips to highlight key testimonies supporting Makarim's case. The court has made preparations, including installing cameras, to ensure the proceedings are documented without disruption.
