CPBL: Monkeys Deploy Rare 'Foreign Slugger Connection' for 'King of the Mountain' Showdown, Setting 18-Year League Record

The Rakuten Monkeys are deploying a rare offensive strategy in a crucial "King of the Mountain" series, batting two foreign sluggers, Dawell and Wick, in the third and fourth positions. This "foreign slugger connection" is a historic move, being the first time since 2008 that two foreign power hitters have occupied these consecutive spots in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.

The team's manager, Tseng Hao-chu, hopes this lineup change will create better offensive synergy. The Monkeys recently lost two games, ceding the second-half lead to the Wei Chuan Dragons. Despite out-hitting their opponents in the previous game, the team struggled with overall offensive coordination, most notably failing to score with the bases loaded in the second inning.

In their previous outing, the Monkeys started both foreign hitters, Wick and Dawell, for the first time. Wick went 1-for-5 batting third, while Dawell was 2-for-4 batting fifth. However, the team still lost the game 3-9. The last team to feature two foreign sluggers in the third and fourth spots was the 2008 Sinon Bulls, who had Wenas batting third and Carlos fourth.

Manager Tseng emphasized the need for improvement, stating, "Yesterday we had more hits than the opponent, but the overall lineup coordination had a gap. The most regrettable part was the second inning (with no outs and bases loaded), we didn't score, and we must make corrections."
