Crafting Symbols of Old Zagreb: Artisan Forges Ancient Motifs in Metal and Wood

Matija Žitnik, a craftsman from Zagreb, creates unique souvenirs that tell the stories of Croatia's capital. His work represents a blend of masterful skill, rich tradition, and original artistry, offering an authentic alternative to mass-produced items.

Žitnik began his artisan journey during the COVID-19 pandemic, seeking a new path after burnout and a stroke from his previous job. He decided to pursue work that he found meaningful and enjoyable, starting with just two files in his small workshop in Novi Zagreb.

Everything told me I shouldn't do this, but I succeeded.

He meticulously crafts each piece by hand, whether forging or melting materials. Žitnik experiments with ancient techniques from various cultures and eras, describing his process as one of research and discovery. He personally creates metal alloys, such as 925 silver, for his jewelry and decorative objects.

I've always loved working with my hands, and it was connected to some form of art.

His techniques include engraving and patination to achieve depth and an aged effect. A special focus is placed on 'wood spirits,' traditional guardians of the forest inspired by Slavic and European folklore. These human-like faces carved into wood symbolize protection and a connection to nature, transforming into wearable pendants with unique characters.

Žitnik draws inspiration from diverse sources, including film, music, video games, and nature, with a particular affinity for Slavic mythology, as well as medieval and Renaissance motifs. Symbols of Perun, Veles, forest spirits, and knightly emblems often find their way into his creations.

I don't buy finished metals, I make them myself. If it's silver, I melt it and make a 925 alloy, then I make various jewelry and other items from it.
