Crane Collapses at Jeju Port in Strong Winds, Killing One Worker and Seriously Injuring Another

A crane collapsed onto two workers at Jeju Port, leaving one in cardiac arrest and the other with severe injuries.

The accident occurred at about 3:53 p.m. on the 4th at a wharf in Geonip-dong, Jeju City. Fire officials and the coast guard received a report that a crane had fallen and trapped two men beneath it.

Workers had been repairing a steel plate on the floor of a barge when the crane apparently lost its balance and toppled. The two trapped men were identified as the barge owner and the crane operator.

Firefighters rescued the barge owner, who was found in cardiac arrest. They performed emergency treatment before taking him to a hospital. The crane operator suffered serious fractures in several parts of his body and was also hospitalized.

The coast guard suspects that strong winds at the scene may have caused the crane to lose its center of gravity. Investigators are questioning witnesses and those involved at the site, including whether safety rules were followed.
