Creator of beloved characters Tisja Kljaković-Braić exhibits at Vitturi Castle

Tisja Kljaković-Braić’s latest exhibition turns a road into a way of looking at life. “The Road” opens on Friday, September 4, at Vitturi Castle in Kaštel Lukšić.

The exhibition centers on the artist’s “The Road” cycle, first presented at Zagreb’s Kaptol Gallery in 2024. Kljaković-Braić has since added paintings, giving the series a new spatial and thematic setting.

Curator Mirela Vujević Duvnjak says the cycle began with landscapes the artist saw while driving past areas devastated by fire. Kljaković-Braić interpreted those scenes as tragic, almost informal paintings, then extended them with new narrative images and comments on everyday life. The road represents movement, while the tree serves as an enduring symbol of roots, stillness and the link between earth and sky.

Vujević Duvnjak also points to a contrast in the artist’s work: heavy, tactile layers of material coexist with lyrical, airy and romantic passages. Born in Split, Kljaković-Braić studied painting at the Arts Academy and has held about 40 solo and 30 group exhibitions in Croatia and abroad. She also works in caricature and illustration and writes books. The exhibition remains open until September 30.
