Crime: 32-year-old speeds away from police check, arrested after crash

A turbulent escape from a police check kept officers in Bavaria and Hesse busy early in the morning. Police said a 32-year-old driver first drew attention in Miltenberg, in Lower Franconia, where officers wanted to check him.

During that stop, officers reportedly suspected that he was under the influence of drugs and found that he did not have a valid driving licence. After a blood sample and further measures, police released the man to go home.

Shortly afterward, the same car, again with the 32-year-old at the wheel, attracted attention on federal highway B469 near Stockstadt in the Aschaffenburg district because of the way it was being driven. When a patrol tried to stop him, he allegedly accelerated away.

The driver continued along the A3 toward Cologne and then the A66 to Wiesbaden-Bierstadt. After making a U-turn, the car collided with the pursuing patrol vehicle. Officers provisionally arrested the 32-year-old and the man and woman who were travelling with him.

Police are investigating the driver on suspicion of endangering road traffic, taking part in an illegal motor race, driving under the influence of intoxicating substances and driving without a licence. They are asking witnesses to provide information.
