Cristina Fernández Thanks Supporters on Balcony One Year After Conviction

Former Argentine President Cristina Fernández emerged onto her balcony to greet and thank supporters who had gathered outside her home on Wednesday. The occasion marked the first anniversary of the ratification of her conviction, which led to her house arrest.

Supporters, identifying as Peronist militants, congregated from early afternoon at the intersection of San José and Humberto Primo streets in the Constitución neighborhood of Buenos Aires. They gathered to show their support for Fernández and voice their dissent against the judicial decision that has confined her to her home for the past year.

The Supreme Court upheld a six-year prison sentence and a lifetime ban from public office on June 10, 2025. This conviction relates to irregularities in the awarding of public works during the government of her late husband, Néstor Kirchner, and her own subsequent presidencies, in a case known as 'Vialidad'. Since her confinement, Fernández's home has become a site of pilgrimage for Peronists on significant dates. While she has not made public statements since her house arrest, she uses her social media to comment on political matters and criticize the current government of Javier Milei.
