Critical Shortages Plague Paraguayan Health Center, Patients Denounce Lack of Care

Residents of Cabañas, a community in Caacupé, Paraguay, are denouncing critical deficiencies at their local health center, citing a persistent lack of both medical professionals and essential supplies. The situation is significantly hindering patient care, particularly for those managing chronic health conditions.

Laura Martínez, a local resident, highlighted the absence of a nutritionist as a major concern. This specialist is crucial for patients requiring ongoing monitoring for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, all of which are closely linked to diet. The lack of this service forces many patients to travel to other health facilities, incurring additional costs and sometimes leading them to abandon necessary medical follow-ups.

Adding to the center's woes is the scarcity of testing strips for glucose meters, a fundamental tool for diabetes management. Martínez explained that this shortage prevents timely blood sugar level checks, delaying diagnosis and impeding adequate patient monitoring. "It is worrying that a health service operates without such basic elements," she stated, emphasizing that the community deserves dignified care without the burden of purchasing supplies or traveling for complete treatment.

Martínez noted that these deficiencies are not new and have persisted despite repeated community complaints. She attributed the ongoing issues with human resources and supplies to the neglect of public health services in Paraguay's rural areas. The community is appealing to the Ministry of Public Health and the Third Health Region to take immediate action, provide the necessary testing strips, and hire a nutritionist to ensure comprehensive and quality healthcare for the residents of Cabañas.
