Croatia: Ex-footballer Šimić arrested over alleged permit corruption

Former Croatian international footballer Dario Šimić has been released after being arrested on suspicion of corruption related to securing permits for a campsite. Prosecutors opted not to seek pretrial detention for the ex-player, who is suspected of improperly influencing an official to obtain necessary approvals.

According to reports, Šimić allegedly intervened with Neda Livljanić, former head of the Tourism Department in Šibenik-Knin County, to "arrange" permits for a campsite. The proposed campsite was planned for a parcel of land that is not zoned for construction. Marin Miškić, a former president of NK Vodice and vice-president of HSS, who was also arrested and later released, is believed to have acted as an intermediary in the alleged influence peddling.

Sources indicate that the anti-corruption agency USKOK does not believe Livljanić received a bribe. Instead, they suggest she "helped because she helped everyone." This framing implies a pattern of favors rather than direct illicit gain, though the core allegation remains that improper influence was exerted to bypass zoning regulations.

The case highlights potential issues with permit acquisition and land use zoning in the region. While Šimić has been released, the investigation into the alleged intervention and the circumstances surrounding the permit applications is ongoing.
