Croatia’s hidden gem beats the competition, named Europe’s second-best

Motovun, a picturesque hill town in Croatia’s Istria region, has been named Europe’s second-best hidden gem for 2026. Only the German university town of Tübingen ranked higher.

The ranking by European Best Destinations drew votes from more than 1.3 million travelers in 154 countries. Motovun’s recognition celebrates a destination that has remained distant from mass tourism while preserving its historic character, local atmosphere and culinary traditions.

The medieval town sits above the Mirna River valley, surrounded by ancient walls, a bell tower, panoramic terraces and winding stone streets. Views from the walls stretch across vineyards and forests, including Motovun Forest, known for its white truffles.

Food and seasonal events add to the town’s appeal. Autumn brings truffles and the region’s Teran wine, while summer draws international film enthusiasts to the Motovun Film Festival. Spring and winter offer a quieter, more intimate setting.

The town’s heritage includes Roman foundations and Venetian walls.
