Croatia to provide financial aid to Omiš after wildfires

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković announced on Saturday that the government will provide financial assistance to the city of Omiš and nearby communities devastated by recent wildfires. The fires, which raged across an area of about one thousand hectares, affected multiple towns and villages, including Nemira, Stanići, Lokva Rogoznica, and Medići.

"As we always do in cases of natural disasters, the government will make a decision on financial support for the city of Omiš and these smaller places," Plenković stated. He was speaking to the media in Trsat after a Mass for the Feast of the Assumption. The prime minister emphasized that a decision on aid would follow an assessment of the damages incurred.

Plenković lauded the rapid intervention, coordination, and composure of Croatian firefighters, the military, and all other involved services. "It all happened within a few hours. I was on the phone with them all evening, almost all night, and I think they all worked a miracle together," he said. He noted that in the past decade, approximately 800 million euros have been invested in equipping firefighters.

Despite the successful defense of numerous houses and critical infrastructure like a power substation, the fires did cause damage. Several cars and auxiliary structures were destroyed, and tragically, one person lost their life. The Prime Minister extended his condolences to the family of the deceased. Police are currently investigating the cause of the fires. Plenković also commented on the current tourism season, noting it is slightly better than last year in terms of arrivals, overnight stays, and revenue.
