Croatian coach leads Žalgiris to historic European success after playoff win

Lithuanian football club Kauno Žalgiris has achieved a significant milestone by securing a spot in the European autumn season. The team secured their advancement by defeating the Faroe Islands champions, Klaksvik, with a narrow 1-0 aggregate victory.

The decisive goal came late in the second leg, in the 85th minute, scored by former Hajduk player Leon Kreković. This single goal was enough to overcome Klaksvik after a goalless first leg, marking a historic success for Žalgiris.

The team is managed by Croatian coach Željko Sopić, who has remained undefeated in his seven matches since taking charge last month. The celebration following the victory was notably led by Sopić, who climbed onto a table and directed his jubilant players. Footage of the celebration quickly went viral on social media among Žalgiris fans.

With this win, Žalgiris has guaranteed at least a playoff spot in the Europa League. Should they lose to Dinamo Zagreb in the third qualifying round, they will drop into the Europa League playoffs. If they are defeated there, they will proceed directly to the Conference League group stage. The club also features two other Croatian players: former Dinamo Zagreb player Ivan Fiolić.
