Croatian government mourns Hajduk legend Ivan Gudelj: “Many will miss him”

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković has expressed condolences after the death of Ivan Gudelj, remembering the Hajduk great as both an exceptional footballer and a “great man.”

In a message issued on behalf of the Croatian government and himself, Plenković said he received the news with sadness. He described Gudelj as one of Hajduk's best and most beloved players of the 1980s, whose playing career ended prematurely despite his outstanding achievements.

Plenković also highlighted Gudelj's talent, skill, fighting spirit and energy. Many regarded him as one of the most modern Croatian footballers of his generation, he said. Gudelj later continued his work in football as a coach and sports official, passing his knowledge generously to younger players.

The prime minister said Gudelj, who was highly respected in football circles, had left an indelible mark on the history of Croatian football and in the hearts of generations of supporters. “Many will miss him,” Plenković said, extending his sympathy to Gudelj's family, friends and colleagues.
