Croats shine in German Cup: Ljubičić and Matanović score braces

Croatian footballers enjoyed a highly successful evening in the first round of the German Cup, with several players making significant contributions for their clubs. Marin Ljubičić, Igor Matanović, and Gabriel Vidović all found the back of the net, showcasing strong performances.

Marin Ljubičić was instrumental in Union Berlin's 4-2 away victory against Eintracht Braunschweig. Coming off the bench in the 62nd minute, Ljubičić immediately assisted Tom Rothe for the equalizer before scoring twice himself. His goals in the 72nd minute and in stoppage time secured the win for Union Berlin. Josip Juranović also provided an assist for Union Berlin's first goal before being substituted.

Igor Matanović matched Ljubičić's tally with two goals and an assist in Freiburg's dominant 5-1 away win over Fortuna Düsseldorf. Matanović scored in the 71st minute to extend Freiburg's lead and later assisted Jordy Makengo's goal in the 80th minute. He capped off his impressive performance with his second goal in the final minutes of the match.

Gabriel Vidović also contributed to a successful day for Croatian talent, scoring a goal in Paderborn's 4-2 away victory against Phonix Lübeck. These performances highlight the growing impact of Croatian players in German football competitions.
