Cruz Azul beats Atlante to enter qualifying zone

Cruz Azul secured a crucial 3-1 victory over Atlante on Friday, propelling them into a qualifying position within their group as the Apertura 2026 tournament in Mexico entered its second matchday. The win marked a significant turnaround for the team after a heavy defeat in the previous week.

Daniela Calderón was the standout performer, netting two goals, while Liliana Rodríguez contributed the third for the victorious side. Atlante managed a single goal through American player Ricshya Walker. Cruz Azul dominated possession in the first half, taking an early lead in the eighth minute thanks to Calderón, who converted a pass from Desiree Mendoza.

Despite Atlante's efforts to equalize, particularly a missed opportunity by Walker in the 39th minute, they struggled to break down Cruz Azul's defense. In the second half, Atlante found the net in the 66th minute with a header from Walker, but Cruz Azul responded strongly. Rodríguez scored a spectacular volley from outside the area in the 81st minute, and Calderón sealed the win with a header in the 90th minute.

This victory brings Cruz Azul's record to two wins, one loss, and six points, placing them fourth in Group A. They are level on points with group leaders Tigres UANL, who have a game in hand. The Apertura tournament continues with several other matches scheduled throughout the weekend.
