Cuban literature marks 40 years since the death of master storyteller Onelio Jorge Cardoso

Cuban literature celebrates the 40th anniversary of the passing of Onelio Jorge Cardoso, a revered figure and "master storyteller." His work, particularly his short stories, continues to captivate readers with its adherence to the principles of masterful storytelling and its profound humanism.

The author reflects on the enduring power of Cardoso's narratives, noting that even after 40 years, revisiting his stories remains a compelling experience. A special commemorative edition of "Cuentos" (Stories) by Cardoso, distributed for free, has been released by the Letras Cubanas publishing house. This edition pays tribute to the author on his centenary and was made available through a passionate reader.

Literary critic Rogelio Riverón highlights Cardoso's unique ability to craft authentic characters whose voices resonate with readers. Riverón emphasizes that Cardoso's characters possess an "ancestral" quality, achieved through a masterful use of language and rhythm that elevates their speech beyond everyday reality. This distinctive style makes his rural narratives, and indeed all his works, stand out in Cuban literature.

The collection features over 30 stories, each described as a "jewel" of Cuban and regional storytelling.
