Cumhuriyet highlights August book recommendations, including Lermontov and Lao She

Cumhuriyet newspaper's "Kültür" (Culture) section has unveiled its book recommendations for August, featuring a diverse range of literary works. Among the highlighted titles is Mikhail Lermontov's "A Hero of Our Time," translated by Ataol Behramoğlu. The novel, written during a period of intense censorship in Tsarist Russia, explores the nature of its characters and their impact on society, particularly through the "superfluous man" archetype.

Another prominent recommendation is Lao She's "Teahouse," translated by Giray Fidan. This seminal work of modern Chinese theater, set in a traditional teahouse, captures the lives of ordinary people across different social classes during pivotal moments in Chinese history. First staged in 1958, "Teahouse" has become a staple of the Chinese theater repertoire and is credited with introducing modern influences into Chinese literature.

The selection also includes Walker Percy's "Lancelot," translated by Suzan Aral Akçora, which examines post-1960s cultural and social values in America through a murder mystery. Additionally, Paul Harding's "This Other Eden," translated by Betül Kadıoğlu, is featured, telling the story of a community founded by formerly enslaved people in 1792.
