Curfew Imposed in Southeastern Nepal After Religious Clashes Leave Three Dead

Authorities imposed a curfew across multiple cities in southeastern Nepal on Friday, July 31, 2026, as tensions persisted after several days of religious violence. The unrest, which erupted on Sunday, has claimed at least three lives, according to local officials.

In the district of Sunsari, bordering India, a clash late Sunday between Hindus and Muslims left 25 people injured. Officials stated that the violence was triggered by a dispute over loud music and religious flags displayed during a Hindu event. Two men were fatally shot in Sunsari on Sunday, and a third death was reported Thursday in the neighboring Siraha district amidst sporadic skirmishes.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the incidents are under investigation. While no violence was reported on Friday, the indefinite curfews were implemented to prevent any recurrence of the clashes. The government has pledged a fair and transparent investigation into the violence, promising to punish those responsible.

Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah, who garners significant support from the younger generation, appealed for calm on Thursday. He assured citizens that the government would conduct an impartial inquiry and hold accountable those responsible for the unrest.
