Customs generate N88.9bn, seize N2.16bn goods in Kano

The Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service collected N88.93 billion between January and September 2026, while its seizures and detentions during the period carried a combined duty-paid value of N2.16 billion.

Acting Area Controller Deputy Comptroller UU Adamu announced the figures at a press briefing at Customs House in Bompai, Kano. He said revenue had risen from N63.08 billion at the end of the first half of the year. July produced the command’s highest monthly collection on record, with more than N14 billion generated.

You may wish to recall that during our half-year press briefing, the Command generated the sum of 63,078,655,523.44 billion Naira in revenue.

The anti-smuggling operations covered a broad range of goods. Customs seized 1,491 cartons of foreign spaghetti valued at N38.74 million and 2,928 packs of foreign macaroni worth N280.73 million. Officers also intercepted foreign parboiled rice, vegetable oil, soaps, smuggled vehicles and suspected diverted transit truck heads.

The command listed five diverted 40-foot transit containers with a value of N645.16 million, seven smuggled vehicles valued at N410.54 million and eight suspected diverted truck heads worth N300.91 million. It also intercepted 712,690 tablets and 17,470 vials and ampoules of unregistered pharmaceutical products, which it handed to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

It is therefore important to note that the month of July recorded the highest monthly collection in the history of the Command with over 14 billion Naira generated.

Customs separately reported the seizure of 48 animals on August 25: 15 primates, four wild cats, 25 wild birds, two albino crocodiles and a honey badger. Three suspects were arrested and handed to the Special Wildlife Office at Customs headquarters. Adamu described it as possibly the largest and most diverse single wildlife seizure in the service’s history and in the West African subregion.

The command also intercepted undeclared foreign currency comprising $73,300, £15,975 and 827,800 Saudi riyals. Two suspects were handed to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s Kano office for investigation.

At this point, it is important to note that this is believed to be the largest and most diverse single seizure of wildlife ever recorded in the history of the Nigeria Customs Service and probably the West African Sub Region.
