Cuti Romero moves to Atlético Madrid on five-year deal

Cristian “Cuti” Romero’s chapter with Tottenham Hotspur has closed, with the Argentine defender finalizing a move to Atlético de Madrid. The deal, valued at approximately 40 million euros including potential add-ons, will see Romero sign a five-season contract under Diego Simeone.

Spanish and English media have reported the agreement, with official club confirmations expected soon after the player completes physicals. Inter Milan also showed interest, but Atlético Madrid’s offer proved more favorable. Simeone has long sought Romero, viewing him as a crucial addition to his squad.

The transfer negotiations with Tottenham were complex, with previous seasons’ financial demands hindering any deal. However, Tottenham’s stance softened this transfer window, reportedly due to their strained relationship with Romero. The player’s own desire to play in La Liga and work with Simeone was also a significant factor.

At 28, Romero arrives at Atlético Madrid after participating in the 2026 World Cup with Argentina, where they finished as runners-up. He joined Tottenham in 2021, playing 157 matches and scoring 13 goals. His career trajectory saw him move from Belgrano to Genoa, then Atalanta, before his transfer to England. His international success, including winning the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 and 2024 Copa Américas, has further elevated his profile.
