Cyclosporiasis outbreak in the US: What is the risk of parasitic infections in Slovenia?

An outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, continues to spread across the United States. As of early May, health authorities have confirmed or are investigating more than 7,400 cases in 34 states, with Michigan and Ohio reporting the highest numbers.

Health officials suspect that leafy vegetables are the source of the infection. Cyclosporiasis symptoms include prolonged watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. Approximately one in eleven patients required hospitalization.

In Slovenia, health authorities have registered a few cases of cyclosporiasis in the past and this year. However, the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) stated that there is no cause for alarm regarding a widespread outbreak in the country. While cyclosporiasis is present, other intestinal infections are more common in Slovenia.

The parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis is transmitted through contaminated food or water. The infection is typically contracted by consuming produce contaminated with the parasite's oocysts. Proper food handling and hygiene practices are crucial in preventing its spread.
