Czech firefighters battle wind-fueled forest fire near Opava

Firefighters in the Czech Republic are engaged in a significant battle against a forest fire near Opava, in the Větřkovice - Nové Vrbno area. The blaze, initially contained, has been exacerbated by strong winds, causing it to spread to nearby stubble fields of a harvested crop.

The challenging conditions, including high temperatures and persistent wind, are making the firefighting operation difficult. Fire crews have escalated the alert level to the third of four stages, indicating the severity of the situation. The Moravskoslezský kraj fire department reported the incident on social media platform X, noting the wind's role in the fire's expansion.

To combat the fire, 21 units are on the scene, supported by a police helicopter equipped with a 900-liter Bambi bucket. Another helicopter with a larger 3,450-liter capacity is en route, along with large-capacity water tankers. The incident commander has requested additional specialized vehicles, including a 21,000-liter Taurus and a 12,000-liter Titan water tanker, to support the extensive operation.
