Wildfire Forces Evacuations on Popular Greek Island of Paros

Authorities on the popular Greek island of Paros have ordered the precautionary evacuation of several areas after a wildfire broke out at a waste dump overnight. The blaze quickly spread to scrubland in the southern part of the island due to strong winds.

Around 100 firefighters, supported by two aircraft and five helicopters, are currently battling the flames. A fire department spokesperson described the night as challenging but noted that the situation had improved by morning. "The fire is not as intense today, although scattered hotspots are still appearing, so we must remain vigilant," said Vazeos Petropoulos, a local official responsible for the administration of Paros and the neighboring island of Antiparos.

As a precautionary measure, approximately ten villages were evacuated. Information regarding the number of residents and visitors who had to leave their homes was not immediately available. Paros, part of the Cyclades archipelago, is one of Greece's most visited destinations, alongside Santorini.

Greece faces devastating wildfires almost every summer. Long dry spells, high temperatures, and strong winds create ideal conditions for flames to spread rapidly. Dozens of other fires have broken out across Greece in recent days, but firefighters managed to bring them under control before they caused casualties or extensive damage.
