Czech Republic confirms U.S. extradition request for Mexicans held on drug and terror charges

The Czech Republic's Minister of Justice, Jeronym Tejc, has confirmed that the United States has requested the extradition of four Mexican nationals. These individuals were detained in the Czech Republic in June 2026 and are facing charges in the U.S. related to organized crime, drug trafficking, and terrorism.

Tejc stated that his ministry received the extradition request from U.S. authorities following the suspects' arrest and placement in pre-trial detention in the Czech Republic. The charges they face in the United States include involvement in drug trafficking and terrorism, with specific mention of arms trafficking.

Two of the four suspects have already been extradited to the United States. According to Minister Tejc, these individuals underwent a simplified extradition process, which bypasses a court ruling on admissibility and a decision by the Justice Minister. Instead, the U.S. was directly authorized to arrange their transfer, which occurred on August 7.

The other two suspects remain in custody within the Czech Republic. Their extradition requests are currently under review by the prosecution, a process that typically takes several months. Local media reports suggest these individuals are linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and are accused by U.S. prosecutors of attempting to purchase submachine guns, grenade launchers, and mortars in the Czech Republic in exchange for fentanyl or methamphetamine.

Minister Tejc declined to comment on the alleged arms purchase, citing a lack of specific information. A spokesperson for the Czech police also stated that while assistance has been provided to U.S. colleagues, further comments are not possible due to the sensitive nature of the case.
