Omiš, Croatia – Tourists from the Czech Republic recounted their harrowing escape from a wildfire that rapidly engulfed areas near Omiš, Croatia. The blaze, fanned by strong winds, spread with alarming swiftness, forcing the evacuation of residents and visitors from threatened locations.

The local population immediately told us to get out of Lokva and head towards Omiš."

As they attempted to evacuate towards Omiš, the tourists discovered that the main road had been closed, adding to the chaos. They were among the first to arrive at a hastily established reception center in the Ribnjak sports hall in Omiš, where aid workers were distributing water and food. Beds were prepared for those who could not return to their homes or accommodations for the night.

The situation at the fire site remained serious, with the powerful winds hindering firefighting efforts, especially as aerial support like water-bombing planes cannot operate effectively at night. Numerous fire crews were on the ground, with additional teams en route from various Dalmatian counties. Authorities closed the Adriatic highway through Lokva Rogoznica, redirecting traffic. While the primary focus is on the safety and well-being of evacuees, there have been no reports of casualties thus far.
