Da Nang: Technology engine is 'starting up'

Da Nang is charting a new course for development, aiming to become a leading technology, finance, logistics, and innovation center in Southeast Asia. Following its recent administrative merger, the city is poised for unprecedented growth and influence.

The revised development plan for Da Nang, spanning 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050, positions the city not only as a growth engine for the central region but also as a regional powerhouse. With an expanded natural area and a projected population of 3.1 million, Da Nang envisions itself as a smart, eco-friendly, and culturally rich multi-center urban area. The city has set ambitious economic targets, including an average GRDP growth rate of 11-12% per year between 2026 and 2030, and a per capita GRDP of approximately $8,500. Crucially, the digital economy is expected to account for 35-40% of the GRDP, a proportion among the highest nationwide.

A central tenet of this new strategy is the prioritization of science-technology (KH-CN), innovation, and digital transformation as primary growth drivers. Da Nang is focusing on developing high-tech industries as a new economic pillar and fostering a modern digital technology ecosystem, complete with concentrated digital technology zones, Digital Hubs, and technology testing Sandboxes. The city aims to be the science-technology leader for the central and Central Highlands regions.

To support this digital push, Da Nang is investing in a shared digital data infrastructure, international-standard data centers (Tier III and Tier IV), a Green Data Center, and an information security center. Beyond technology, the city aspires to establish Vietnam's International Financial Center (IFC) to spur new growth in the central region. This is complemented by plans for a Free Trade Zone (FTZ) integrated with major international ports like Lien Chieu and Tien Sa, Da Nang International Airport, and a regional logistics network.

By 2050, Da Nang aims to be an Asian-class heritage, creative, eco-friendly, and smart city, serving as the central region's leader in technology, innovation, and the green economy. This strategic repositioning is seen as a historic opportunity to restructure its development model and enhance its role regionally and internationally.
